DeBlasio may avoid runoff by a whisker; Charles Hynes loses DA race

Bill DeBlasio appeared headed to face GOP nominee Joe Lhota in November in the race for mayor --that is, if second-placer William Thompson doesn't demand a recount. With 97 percent of the precincts reporting by early Wednesday morning, DeBlasio received slightly over 40 percent of the Democratic primary vote; he needed to cross the 40 percent threshold to avoid a runoff with Thompson.
=============================================================
UPDATE
Thompson has bowed out of the race, and is throwing his support behind DeBlasio.
==============================================================
City Council Speaker Christine Quinn -- who had been the front-runner earlier in the race -- came in third with 15 percent of the vote. Current City Comptroller John Liu -- tainted after two of his campaign aides were indicted on charges of campaign -finance abuse -- was left in the dust with 7 percent, but ahead of former Congressman Anthony Weiner, scarred by two sexting scandals, who garnered just under 5 percent.
Former MTA head John Lhota, who was deputy mayor in the Giuliani administration, solidly beat out billionaire supermarket tycoon John Catsimatidis 53 percent to 41 percent for the Republican nod for mayor.
In an upset in the race for Brooklyn district attorney, Ken Thompson prevailed over incumbent Charles Hynes, who had been the borough's DA for nearly a quarter century.
