A construction worker was almost buried alive when he fell into a trench that partially caved in on him at East 23rd Street and Avenue X in Sheepshead Bay about 2 p.m., Monday, Aug. 26.

The man struggled to breathe as debris and a wooden board trapped him, officials said.

"The police came right away and they worked about from 20 to 30 minutes to take him out, because he was there with the wood," a witness, who had called police, told NY 1. "I guess a lot of dirt came after, so it was covering him to here," she said, gesturing to her mid-section.

The worker, who was not immediately identified, was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he was listed in serious but stable condition.
