Creations in the sand take over the Coney Island beach

The Alliance for Coney Island also brought in a few professional sculptors to create replicas of the Wonder Wheel, the Cyclone roller coaster, the New York Aquarium, and other Coney Island icons.
Dozens of sand artisans turned out last weekend to compete for cash prizes at the 23rd annual Coney Island Sand Sculpting, offering  versions of everything from sea creatures to fairy-tale characters.

One pro offered a tip for aspiring sculptors: "Water, water, water. Inside and out. Water has to be all through the pile," said Chuck Feld.

Frank Russo, who has won awards for his elaborate sand castles, spoke for many when he said that this year's event was particularly welcomed in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, which thrashed Coney Island last October.

"I am delighted. We are all delighted that the beach is back," he said. "They have revived. The place is rebuilt. Some of our team members also lost their houses from sandy – it's upsetting. But we are back and we are building."
